Designed by Moxon Architects and crafted by Tor over two years, Quarry Studios displays impeccable detailing.
As the steel, timber and concrete structure are often left visible as a finish, each stage of the build was carried out with skill and precision from a dedicated team.
With durability and sustainability as core themes throughout the build, a large section wall of locally-sourced Douglas Fir links the architects' studio with the café — both highly insulated spaces, heated with a ground source heat pump, whose borehole goes 250m into Cairngorms granite.
Fireplaces were crafted with steel and concrete, where texture-rich local timber boards were selected as shuttering to leave a permanent imprint.
The old quarry site was rich with self-seeded birch, rowan and alder, along with other flora. Special care was taken to relocate and replant trees and to protect and enhance the habitat which included the installation of a pond fed with rainwater from the buildings’ aluminium roof.
